From Good to Glossy: Mastering Garage Floor Epoxy

Mastering Garage Floor Epoxy: Tenhulzen’s Training with Mallory Paint

At Tenhulzen Construction, we pride ourselves on delivering not just high-quality remodels and renovations, but exceptional finishes that stand the test of time. That’s why we were thrilled to partner with our local Benjamin Moore provider, Mallory Paint, for a hands-on training session focused on one of the most durable and visually striking upgrades a homeowner can make: garage floor epoxy coating with decorative vinyl chips.

Instead of a classroom lecture, we turned our own Tenhulzen shop floor into a real-world training ground!

The Perfect Partnership: Tenhulzen and Mallory Paint

Mallory Paint, our trusted source for Benjamin Moore products and expertise, knows the Corotech garage floor epoxy system inside and out. They understand that a beautiful epoxy floor is 90% preparation and 10% application. They brought the materials, the expertise, and the guidance, while our Tenhulzen team brought the eagerness to learn and the commitment to mastery.

Mastering the Garage Floor Epoxy Process: A Step-by-Step Workshop

Using the proven Corotech system from Benjamin Moore, the Mallory Paint representative walked our team through every critical stage of applying garage floor epoxy:

1. The Crucial Clean & Etch: Mallory emphasized that garage floor epoxy is only as good as the surface it adheres to. We practiced using a heavy-duty degreaser to eliminate all oil and contaminants, followed by the Corotech V620 Concrete Etch. The goal: to create a surface that feels like medium-grit sandpaper, which is essential for proper mechanical adhesion. This step, they reminded us, is non-negotiable for a lasting finish.

2. Mixing and Cutting In: Our team learned the proper induction time for the two-part Corotech epoxy—the waiting period after mixing Part A and Part B that activates the curing process. We then focused on proper “cutting in” with a brush around the perimeter, ensuring we masked the edges perfectly to get those crisp, clean lines that define a professional job.

3. The Base Coat and Broadcast: This is where the magic happens! We practiced rolling the epoxy base coat in manageable 4×4 sections. Crucially, immediately after rolling, the team learned the technique for broadcasting the decorative vinyl chips. The Mallory expert taught us to toss the flakes upward to allow them to fall evenly, rather than dropping them straight down, which can lead to clumps. We learned the importance of applying the chips with a “heavy hand” to achieve the high-coverage, commercial-grade look that also adds texture and durability.

4. The Final Seal: Once the garage floor epoxy cured and the excess, unattached chips were scraped away, the final step was applying the clear Corotech topcoat. This sealant locks the chips in place, provides UV resistance, and gives the floor a durable, high-gloss finish that protects against hot-tire pickup.
