Outdoor Covered Deck: Extend Your Living Space and Lifestyle

Extend Your Living Space and Lifestyle with Outdoor Covered Deck

We genuinely enjoy designing and building outdoor covered decking areas. These projects go beyond simple additions; they are a seamless extension of your home and, more importantly, an enhancement of your lifestyle. By expanding your usable space, you can extend the seasons, making it possible to entertain, relax, or enjoy the game outdoors year-round—even during a cool evening or a typically rainy Pacific Northwest afternoon.

Bringing the Indoors Out

The goal of a great outdoor covered living space is to seamlessly blend the interior comfort of your home with the beauty of the outdoors. The result is a highly usable, versatile space that adds significant value to both your property and your daily life.

Key Features That Make the Difference:

  • Year-Round Comfort: This particular project is a perfect example. With built-in heaters (featuring three settings for customizable warmth) and a beautiful, vented fireplace, the space stays cozy even when it’s raining or snowing. Because the fireplace is vented out of the side and front, you actually get the heat radiating right into your living area.
  • Entertainment Ready: Imagine watching the Mariners game (Go M’s!) on the outdoor TV, with sound coming from the integrated outdoor speakers. Add a stylish chandelier and comfortable furniture, and it truly becomes another room of your house.
  • Design Details: We installed a sleek cable rail system, provided by one of our fantastic trade partners, which keeps the view open and modern. This client also added a versatile bar set up, perfect for entertaining. For those who want more, we often incorporate full outdoor kitchens, complete with barbecues, cabinets, and plumbing for sinks.

Engineered for the Pacific Northwest

We put a lot of thought into the engineering and materials that make these structures both durable and aesthetically pleasing, especially for the specific challenges of our climate.

  • Lodge-Style Timber System: We utilize a big timber system that creates a strong, lodge-style feeling that is perfect for the Pacific Northwest. This is tied together with nice, beefy brackets and structural four-by-eight rafters, ensuring the structure is sound and substantial.
  • Car Decking Ceiling: The ceiling is made of a car decking product, which serves as both the roof and the beautiful wood soffit. This material eliminates the need for traditional insulation and venting, avoiding common moisture problems and simplifying the roof system—a huge benefit in our region.
  • Illuminated Beauty: We love adding those little extras, like LED strip up-lighting. At night, this feature causes the wood soffit to glow, highlighting the space’s beautiful features and creating a truly dramatic ambiance.
  • Maximizing Natural Light: A common concern is that the cover will block light from entering the house. We address this with strategic placement of large skylights. We rely on the awesome, no-leak products from Velux (we are a certified installer and dealer) to keep the adjacent interior spaces bright while keeping the outdoor area protected.

The Decking Investment

For the deck surface itself, we highly recommend TimberTech AZEK decking. It is a pure PVC product, making it lightweight, cooler than composite, and resistant to the expansion and contraction that other materials experience. While it is a little more expensive upfront, its longevity is unmatched. Since it’s true PVC, it doesn’t rely on resins that can eventually fade or fail, making it a perfect long-term investment.

Community Matters

With this particular client, we were fortunate to connect through our involvement in the local Rotary Club in Mill Creek. We believe in giving back and have worked on several community projects in the area, including those for Cocoon House and local bridges. This shared value of community service helped us build a relationship of trust from the very start, which translated into a smooth design process and a truly phenomenal end result that everyone is happy with.

If you’re considering extending your home’s usable space and enhancing your outdoor lifestyle, a custom outdoor covered deck is one of the best investments you can make. We love doing these projects, and we’d love to discuss how we can create a custom outdoor oasis for you.
